From the day we first poked our stubby man-fingers at a map of the world, optimistically tracing a line across the huge landmass of Europe and Asia, it became obvious that we were in for a trip of extremes. Large areas of yellowish-brown, deceptively innocent bodies of blue and understated triangular peaks dotted the path we'd sketched along the map, reflective of the dizzying mountain peaks, arid deserts, bustling cities and desolate wastelands that we will encounter...
